Para dar inicio al Mes de la Herencia Hispana y el tema de 2021 de “Celebración de los líderes y campeones de la comunidad hispanoamericana”, mostramos nuestro agradecimiento a Sofia Alemany, Gerente de nómina, por su reciente Day of Giving y su ayuda para establecer un laboratorio en Puerto Rico para estudios y trabajos de preservación de abejas
AC: Para su Day of Giving, ¿qué hizo?
SA: Para mi Day of Giving, ayudé en el recogido y limpieza del área donde se va a construir el laboratorio de estudios de abeja y cuarto oscuro. También, busqué las cotizaciones con las distintas compañías para la compra e instalación del aire acondicionado en la facilidad.
AC: ¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre el laboratorio y el proyecto de construcción?
SA: El Proyecto es construir un área dentro del laboratorio para estudiar y documentar abejas. Cuando esté terminado, este laboratorio quedaría adentro del único laboratorio de abejas de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, localizado en la estación experimental de Gurabo que pertenece a la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Conociendo las necesidades de mi hermana, estudiante Doctoral de la Universidad, y de sus compañeros decidimos agregar al laboratorio esta área para apoyar sus estudios de abejas. Dado a que las abejas ya no necesitarían viajar a Rio Piedras, la variable de tránsito ya no afectaría sus experimentos. De ahí la importancia del diseño de un área dentro del laboratorio y el enfoque inicial de crear un área limpia con microscopios, incubadora, luz roja, entre otros aspectos necesarios para los experimentos.
AC: ¿Qué te motivó a ser voluntaria allí?
SA: Mi mayor motivación fue eliminar riesgos para mi hermana y sus compañeros al tener que llevar en sus carros cuadros con abejas y reactivos químicos. Además, también deseaba echar una mano y ayudar en todo lo que pudiera, por eso me ofrecí como voluntaria en el proceso inicial de limpieza y organización.
AC: ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia como voluntaria? ¿Puede explicarnos todo el proceso?
SA: Fue una experiencia excelente y enriquecedora al conocer tantas personas enamoradas de unos insectos que son tan útiles y necesarios para la vida humana. Convertir el área de maquinaria para madera y de almacenamiento en un área limpia y lista fueron los cimientos para que se pudiese construir un laboratorio funcional y cuarto oscuro. Comenzamos removiendo las maderas destinadas para ser las cajas y los cuadros de las abejas. Luego, movimos las máquinas de la maquinaria para madera, los anaqueles, pailas de pintura, entre otros a un área abierta. Posteriormente, empezamos a limpiar el área donde se iba a construir y a higienizar los equipos (incubadora). Después que el espacio estuviese limpio, comenzó la construcción.
AC: ¿Qué dirías para animar a otros a participar?
SA: El agradecimiento recibido de parte de los Doctores, los estudiantes Doctorales y subgraduados por ayudar con este proyecto fue algo que me motiva para seguir ayudándoles en futuras ocasiones. El tener la oportunidad de dar, sabiendo que no se va a recibir nada a cambio, es una de las experiencias mas gratificantes por las que el ser humano puede tener. Les recomiendo a todas las personas de la comunidad de Activus Connect que planifiquen su Day of Giving porque dándole a otros nuestro tiempo, esfuerzo y amor es que lograremos los cambios deseados en nuestra comunidad, nuestro país y el mundo.
AC: Por último, ¿hay algo que le gustaría decirles a nuestros lectores antes de irnos?
SA: “Si la abeja desaparece de la superficie de la Tierra, al hombre no le quedarían más de cuatro años de vida”. – Albert Einstein.

To kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month and the 2021 theme of “Celebrating Hispanic American Community Leaders and Champions“, we show appreciation to Sofia Alemany, Payroll Manager, for her recent Day of Giving and her assistance with setting up a lab in Puerto Rico for bee studies and preservation work.
AC: For your Day of Giving, what did you do?
SA: For my Day of Giving, I helped in cleaning and organizing of an area where a bee study laboratory, and darkroom are being built. I also, did research and requested quotes from various companies for purchasing and installing an air conditioner in the facility.
AC: Can you tell us a bit about the laboratory and construction project?
SA: The project is to build an area within the laboratory to study and document bees. When finished, this will be the only bee laboratory in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, located in the Gurabo experimental station that belongs to the University of Puerto Rico. Knowing the needs of my sister, a doctoral student at the University, and her colleagues, we decided to add to the laboratory to support their bee studies. Since the bees will no longer need to travel to Rio Piedras, the transit will no longer be a variable impacting their experiments. Hence the importance of the design of the area within the laboratory and the initial focus of creating a clean area with microscopes, incubator, red light, among other aspects necessary for the experiments.
AC: What motivated you to volunteer there?
SA: My biggest motivation was eliminating risks for my sister and her colleagues of having to carry bee frames and chemical reagents in their cars. Furthermore, I also wanted to lend a hand and help in any way I could which is why I volunteered in this initial setup and cleaning process.
AC: How was your experience while volunteering? Can you walk us through the whole process?
SA: It was an excellent and enriching experience to meet so many people in love with insects that are so useful and necessary for human life. Converting the storage and machinery area to a clean and ready space enabled us to create the beginnings of a working laboratory and darkroom. We began by removing the box and bee frame supplies. Then, we moved the machinery, shelves, paint buckets, among other items, to an open area. Later, we cleaned the area, and sanitized the equipment (incubator). After the space was clean, the construction began.
AC: What would you say to encourage others to participate?
SA: The gratitude received from the Doctors, Doctoral students and undergraduates for helping with this project was something that motivates me to continue want to help in the future. Having the opportunity to give, knowing that nothing will be received in return, is one of the most rewarding experiences that human beings can have. I recommend that everyone in the Activus community plan their Day of Giving because by giving others our time, effort and love, we will achieve the desired changes in our community, our country and the world.
AC: Lastly, is there anything you’d like to tell our readers before we go?
SA: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live.” – Albert Einstein.
