Inspiring Forward: Finding Peace and Purpose through Volunteerism

We met with Tori Shamblin (TS) who shared her experience during the process of rebuilding and nurturing a church as she took on a pivotal role in maintaining the church’s tidiness and structure.

AC: What organization or local cause did you volunteer for?

TS: I volunteered at our local library. They only have one librarian, and she can get overwhelmed when book donations come in, so I assisted in getting them out of boxes and bags and placed appropriately on shelves.

AC: Can you please provide an overview of their mission?

TS: They are just a community library, but they do hold reading programs for children during the summer and an array of other activities.

AC: Was this your first time volunteering for this organization or cause? Please elaborate.

TS: I have volunteered here many times in the past as a child. I used to read for the summer reading program to children, as well as help them clean and put away books that were returned.

AC: Where there any requirements for this type of volunteerism?

TS: There are no requirements. Dorothy is always happy to have extra hands.

AC: Why did you choose to volunteer here for your Day of Giving?

TS: I chose to volunteer here because the library is quiet and peaceful, and I’ve always loved the smell of books.

AC: Can you tell us about your volunteer experience? What did you do? Did your time volunteering meet your expectations?

TS: I spent time helping Dorothy with boxes and bags of donated books that needed organizing and put away in the correct sections.

AC: What would you like to share to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy locally?

TS: I think it’s good to be an active member of your community. We don’t have a lot of non-profit organizations in the small town I live in, but city and government organizations always welcome help too. I’ve even volunteered at the fire department putting data into their systems. Help is always welcome.

AC: Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?

TS: If you ever need to clear your mind, volunteering somewhere that brings you happiness and peace is a great place to start!
