Inspiring Forward: Commitment to Local Environmental Preservation

We met with Alexis Hird (AH), who shared her passion for local environmental preservation through her ongoing volunteer work with the Lakaire community reservation, emphasizing the impact of small, consistent efforts in cleaning up and maintaining local natural spaces.

AC: What organization or local cause did you volunteer for?

AH: Lakaire community reservation- This is a local community organization that removes trash from nearby lakes and wooded areas.

AC: Can you please provide an overview of their mission?

AH: Our goal was to pick up all trash and incorrectly disposed waste. In this area specifically, there are a lot of tires abandoned. Our mission was to properly dispose of the tires and other waste.

AC: Was this your first time volunteering for this organization or cause? Please elaborate.

AH: This was not my first time; I truthfully love my local community. Over time, the trash clouds the beauty. So, every 3 months, I volunteer with the organization.

AC: Where there any requirements for this type of volunteerism?

AH: The requirements are all physical. Must be able to lift over 40 lbs. and walk for long periods. Also, I must be comfortable with unpredictable weather.

AC: Why did you choose to volunteer here for your Day of Giving?

AH: It was close to my home, and they make an immediate difference.

AC: Can you tell us about your volunteer experience? What did you do? Did your time volunteering meet your expectations?

AH: I ran around the woods finding all different types of construction materials to put into a bag to then divide it at the community center.

AC: What would you like to share to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy locally?

AH: Volunteering doesn’t take up your whole day. It’s the simple things that make a difference. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so take a chance!

AC: Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?

AH: I loved the experience, it was very eye-opening to how others affect the environment around us, with little regard. It’s a small non-profit from my local community- it’s all word of mouth by the people in my town. But hopefully, soon, we can expand!
