Christmas is a time to share joy and blessings with those around us by giving back and creating happy memories with them. We met with Leslie Vega Salinas (LVS) to go over her Day of Giving experience volunteering at Mercy House.
AC: What organization or local cause did you volunteer for?
LVS: I volunteered for Mercy House. This organization provides services to 1,500 at-risk and homeless individuals and families annually throughout seven counties in California and Arizona.
AC: Can you please provide an overview of their mission?
LVS: Mercy House has a simple mission: To end the cycle of homelessness of those who enter our system of care.
AC: Was this your first time volunteering for this organization or cause? Please elaborate.
LVS: This was my first time volunteering for this organization, because their mission aligned with my values.
AC: Where there any requirements for this type of volunteerism?
LVS: The first step in volunteering is connecting with their Community Engagement Team to discuss your interests and availability. You will be asked to provide general background information including paid or volunteer experience and documentation of completed trainings. Following their team’s review, they will coordinate a volunteer opportunity with you.
AC: Why did you choose to volunteer here for your Day of Giving?
LVS: I wanted to try a different shelter near me and I heard about Mercy House from a long time ago, so I decided to reach out.
AC: Can you tell us about your volunteer experience? What did you do? Did your time volunteering meet your expectations?
LVS: For me, any time there is an opportunity to get involved in my community is rewarding. Having the chance to do so on my Day of giving is fantastic! I always feel grateful to give back when volunteering.
AC: What would you like to share to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy locally?
LVS: It’s amazing how much other people in need appreciate your time and kindness. What they don’t know is that, your presence there giving back, creates a positive impact on you which you will carry and pass it on to others.
AC: Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?
LVS: Thank you Activus for giving us the opportunity to help.
