PA: I volunteered with the BROC organization.

PA: BROC assists members of the Wilkes community in multiple ways. They provide food boxes and meals to families in need, they assist families with Christmas gifts, and they have a yard sale where everything is .25 cents. They also assist with utilities assistance and clothes.

AC: Was this your first time volunteering for this organization or cause? Please elaborate.

PA: No, this is not my first time volunteering with BROC. I volunteer multiple times throughout the year. I help sort their pantry room, I assist with loading cars with food items, I have assisted with yard sales and with the Christmas organization.

AC: Where there any requirements for this type of volunteerism?

PA: There are no requirements for volunteering. We contact the local office and see if there are any events going on or if they need any assistance and we volunteer for that day or any other day available.

AC: Why did you choose to volunteer here for your Day of Giving?

PA: I have volunteered with this organization for years. When I first moved to Wilkes, I was in between jobs and needed some assistance with food. I went to the food bank at BROC, and found this great organization who went above and beyond to help me and my children. I felt so welcome and I could see the joy this group got from helping. They also informed me of other resources they help with.

AC: Can you tell us about your volunteer experience? What did you do? Did your time volunteering meet your expectations?

PA: I love volunteering and helping those in need. I assisted with delivering meals to homes and assisted with loading cars with food as well. The member calls ahead and advises of the amount of people in the home. We then pack the boxes with food from the pantry and freezers. They then pull up at their appointment time, and we load the car with their boxes. My kids also volunteer with me, I love this organization and the fact that they let my children take part and experience helping others, makes me adore them even more.  They’re an mazing group of people!

AC: What would you like to share to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy locally?

PA: Taking the time out of our busy day to help others who are going through a hard time and have turned to us for help speaks volumes, it gives us a level of gratitude for the things that we take for granted each day.

AC: Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?

PA: Thank you for doing this. This organization allows your children to come in and volunteer with you, my kids love to volunteer. There are so many in our community who need help, when you volunteer it helps the organization to keep going. I truly enjoy helping those in need. The relief on the parent’s face when they get their boxes of food is worth it

JJ: We chose Habitat because I love what the program set out to do for families.

JM: I volunteered with my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. They decided to use their cookie profits to learn how to ski and snowboard.

AC: Can you please provide an overview of their mission?

JM: The Girl Scout mission speaks to the vision we all share for girls: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

AC: Was this your first time volunteering for this organization or cause? Please elaborate.

JM: I was a Girl Scout for about 6 years as a child, with my mom as one of the leaders. When I had my daughter, I knew I wanted her to be a part of the organization. I was excited I was able to be a Leader of both of my daughter’s troops. I currently am a CoLeader to one troop and help when needed for the other troop.

AC: Where there any requirements for this type of volunteerism?

JM: To be a volunteer for Girl Scouts, you must pay the yearly membership, currently $50. You also have to pass a background check that is paid for by the organization. Typically, every couple years, there are a couple of short online trainings you must complete as well.

AC: Why did you choose to volunteer here for your Day of Giving?

JM: I knew the snow adventure was going to be a lot for the current leaders, both physically and mentally with 10 teenage girls attending. I had never been skiing or snowboarding myself, so it was also a fun learning/adventure opportunity for me as well. It was a great moment for me to see the joy and excitement of girls learning new skills (including tackling their own fear, not giving up, etc.)

AC: Can you tell us about your volunteer experience? What did you do? Did your time volunteering meet your expectations?

JM: As mentioned, the girls decided they wanted to learn how to ski and snowboard with their earned cookie money sales. They worked hard to earn enough money for 13 people to attend. This included lodging, food, gear, and lessons. When at rental home, we taught them new food recipes (fondue and jambalaya), skills including prep and clean up, and how to work together. Yes, it the experience fully met my expectations.

AC: What would you like to share to encourage others to volunteer their time and energy locally?

JM: There are so many different organizations that only survive because of their volunteers. There are endless possibilities and positions even if you can’t do physical labor or you prefer to not be around a lot of people. Reach out to an organization that interests you to see what is available. AH: Over the course of about 9 hours, I had the opportunity to volunteer with my family to help the Lakeair Association clean up debris and litter left behind by recent dust storms. It was a rewarding experience, allowing us to make a positive impact on the community while spending quality time together. Our collective efforts helped restore the natural beauty of the area, and it felt great to be part of a team committed to environmental stewardship.

AH: The Lakeair Association is a small, close-knit community of around 25 members dedicated to maintaining and improving our farmland development. I also got to spend time with some cows and chickens, which was a highlight for me since I absolutely love animals. It was such a fun and fulfilling way to spend my time—helping the environment, learning from others, and getting to interact with some adorable animals along the way!

AP: I enjoy what they do, I find that a lot of non-profits that genuinely offer help get lost behind the big names. But the biggest part about building a community is to help those around you to rise to where you’re at. And this organization does that. Plus, everyone there is so nice and constantly looking for ways to make other lives easier. I wanted to be apart of that.

AP: It was a great experience! Watching families receive quality food was a joy. They were very organized so packing things up was very simple. The family would order their food on a computer with a shopper number we gave them, and we would get the order on our end and pack it up. It was quite simple. Thats what I did for my entire time there. I definitely plan on going back to help maybe once a month.

AP: I think the best way to show love is to give your time and energy to those who may not be able to afford to do the same. It’s not enough to just notice things, real change happens when you dedicate time to making something happen yourself.
